It’s time for a new photo contest in North Carolina.

BOONE—The 7th Annual Appalachian Mountain Photography Competition AMPC at Appalachian State University will open for registration and submissions Friday, Sept. 18.

Amateur and professional photographers 13 years of age and older are encouraged to submit at www.appmtnphotocomp.org prior to the competition’s close at 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 29, 2010.

“Last year’s competition was a tremendous success highlighting photographers from the Southeast and beyond and I am really excited to get the seventh annual competition underway” said Andrew Miller, coordinator for Appalachian’s Outdoor Programs and AMPC competition director. The competition attracts entries from across the United States. Last year’s competition marked the first international submissions.

The Grandfather Mountain Camera Clinic

This is one of the High Country events that I have on my life list of things I must do…I’ll make it yet.

August 15-16, 2009

2009 speakers include Bill Fortney, John Chastain, Duane Hall and Melissa Southern.

The Grandfather Mountain Camera Clinic was founded in 1952 by the late Hugh Morton.

A freelance newspaper photographer himself, Morton wanted to know more about his craft and thought other photojournalists from around the region would enjoy the opportunity to learn as well. He began by inviting nationally prominent photojournalists to come to Grandfather Mountain to share information and inspiration with their Carolina counterparts.

If you are any where near Grandfather Mountain on these dates and have an interest in improving your photography skills. I’d jump on the chance to attend.

Picture-perfect moments are easy to come by in North Carolina: a blue heron extending its wide wings to launch itself above the treetops, the quiet serenity of bald cypress mirrored against still waters, or a child pausing at the edge of the sand before splashing into an oncoming wave. Mountain Weather Dreams

I walked out of my house this morning before sunrise. It is garbage pickup day. With the wildlife population explosion we have had I don’t dare take the garbage out too early. When I stepped out on the porch the hot, humid air settled down on my shoulders like a load of bricks. When I made it back into the artificially cooled interior of our home I looked at the weather station on the wall…81° and the humidity was 86%.

After making my lunch to haul in to work, a couple of pieces of toasted ciabatta bread with jam and butter with my morning coffee as I fired up my email led to this report…

Now…Do you understand why I dream of the Blue Ridge Mountains? Do you see that heat index at 5:53 in the morning? The middle of August and we still have months of this hot humid weather to go.

To top it all off, we are still in a drought situation here. We have a front (I refuse to call it a cold front) moving our way and all day long I’ve watched the rain vanish on the radar as it gets close…

So all you folks up on the Blue Ridge…Enjoy that beautiful weather. I wish I was having my morning coffee and email on the porch looking out on the morning fog rise from the valley…
